A Light where Already Are!

One thing Jesus is great at teaching is evangelisation in the ordinary. That is completely what we at Everyman Theology are about! This reading is beautifully perfect for us.
Jesus doesn’t kick off his mission with a big launch or a carefully planned strategy. When things get tense, he heads to Galilee.
Ordinary, mixed, overlooked Galilee.
Matthew tells us this is where Isaiah’s words come true: people living in darkness see a great light.
And how does that light spread?
Jesus walks along a shoreline. He interrupts people at work.
He calls parents, sons, workers, families — right in the middle of normal life. Nets still wet. Boats still tied up. No warning.
That’s important. Because it tells us something freeing about mission and evangelisation: it’s not mainly about doing more.
It’s about following Jesus where we already are.
Mission Starts Where You’re Standing
Peter and Andrew aren’t looking for a mission. James and John are literally mending nets with their dad. Jesus doesn’t wait for them to be ready, trained, or impressive. He just says, Follow me.
That’s our call too. Not to become someone else, but to let Christ shape the life we already have — our homes, relationships, and work — so his light can be seen there.
As Parents: Make Faith Normal, Not Weird
Home is usually the hardest place to “evangelise” because it’s messy and unfiltered. Everyone sees us tired, impatient, distracted. That’s not a failure — that’s real life.
One simple, doable way to live mission as a parent:
Talk about God naturally.
Not sermons. Not forced moments. Just simple, honest language:
“Let’s ask God to help with that.”
“I think God was looking after us there.”
“That was a kind thing — that matters.”
Faith sticks when it feels part of everyday life, not something bolted on. Children learn what we really believe by what we casually mention, not what we formally explain.
As Partners: Let Love Be Visible
Jesus calls brothers together. Mission grows out of relationship. And marriage is one of the clearest places the Gospel can be seen — or hidden.
One realistic way to evangelise as a spouse:
Let forgiveness be visible.
Say sorry. Let things go. Choose peace over winning. People notice that. Especially in a world where relationships are disposable and grudges are worn like badges.
A marriage that keeps choosing patience and commitment, even imperfectly, quietly points beyond itself.
At Work: Be Consistently Human
The first disciples are called straight out of their jobs. Jesus doesn’t tell them their work is meaningless —
he shows them it can become part of something bigger.
One achievable way to evangelise at work:
Treat people well when it would be easier not to.
Listen. Be fair. Refuse gossip. Stay honest. Be kind when you’re tired.
You don’t need to announce your faith.
Over time, consistency raises questions. Light stands out when people are used to shadows.
Following Before Explaining
Jesus doesn’t give the disciples a manual. He invites them to walk with him. Evangelisation still works like that.
We don’t bring the light. Christ does.
Our job is to follow him closely enough that others can see the difference — at the dinner table, in conversations, in ordinary days that don’t feel holy at all.
And somehow, that’s exactly where the light keeps dawning.
Be that light, the light that shines in the darkness, that brings people back to God, that not only finds God in the ordinary, but makes Him visible to others.
