You Were Never Meant to Be a Copy

There’s a strange pressure in the world at the moment to become a polished version of someone else.

Be more successful.

More confident.

More attractive.

More productive.

More spiritual.

More like them.

And somewhere along the way, many of us quietly start believing that who we are right now is not enough.

We edit ourselves depending on the room.

Shrink parts of our personality.

Hide weaknesses.

Tone down what makes us different.

We spend so much time trying to fit in that we forget God never asked us to.

In today’s Gospel, Gospel of John Jesus says something deeply personal:

“I will not leave you as orphans.”

That line matters more than we think.

Because orphans feel abandoned.

Unprotected.

Unseen.

Like they have to survive alone and prove their worth.

And Jesus says: That is not who you are.

You are not forgotten by God.

You are not tolerated by Him.

You are not one more face in a crowd.

You are known.

The real you.

Not the cleaned-up church version.

Not the social media version.

Not the brave version you put on for everyone else.

The anxious you.

The tired you.

The doubting you.

The awkward you.

The trying-your-best-you.

That person is loved completely.

And more than that — defended.

The Gospel introduces the Holy Spirit as the “Advocate” or “Paraclete.” In simple terms, someone who stands beside you. Someone who speaks for you. Someone who supports and strengthens you when you cannot do it yourself.

That changes everything.

Because many of us live as though we are alone in the courtroom of life, constantly defending ourselves to the world.

Trying to prove we matter.

Trying to prove we are good enough.

Trying to prove we deserve love.

But Jesus says you already have an Advocate.

God is not standing at a distance waiting for you to become impressive.

He stands beside you.

In your mess.

In your confusion.

In your ordinary life.

And maybe that’s the challenge this week: to stop apologising for being who God created you to be.

Not arrogant.

Not selfish.

Just honest.

You do not need to become a copy of someone else’s holiness.

You do not need to model your life on the world’s idea of success.

You do not need to erase your personality to become worthy of love.

The saints were never carbon copies.

Saint Peter was impulsive.

Saint Thomas doubted.

Saint Paul was intense.

God did not remove who they were. He transformed it.

That’s what grace does.

The Holy Spirit does not arrive to replace your identity.

He comes to strengthen it.

The world will always tell you to conform.

Jesus calls you to become.

You are already held by God.

So maybe this week, stop fighting so hard to become acceptable.

Instead, walk honestly with the God who already calls you His own.

Because the truth is this:

The most powerful witness you can give to the world is not becoming somebody else.

It is becoming fully yourself — with God beside you.
